Both of these one-week summer intensives are designed to guide students towards college preparation, but are open to all creative teens ages 13 – 18 regardless of college intentions.  Projects will explore a variety of media culminating with a set of completed works that can be included in a personal artist portfolio. Possessing extensive high school education experience, Mason’s Director of Art Education Justin Sutters will instruct both courses, which take place in the School of Art studio classrooms. (Students can sign up for either week or both.)

For the week of July 31st only:
Students have the option to stay in on-campus housing and experience a week of campus life, with special evening activities included, while gaining new friendships with other like-minded artistic students. Added cost = $640

Whether you live near or far, here’s your chance to experience university life at Mason! Students ages 13-18 can enjoy on-campus housing accommodations and meals, along with special evening activities. Students are fully supervised all week, with both male and female RA’s in housing. Rooms are double occupancy (linens and wi-fi included), and 3 meals a day are provided. Check in is Sunday, July 30th between 3:00 – 5:00 pm, and students will check out Friday morning and be ready to depart immediately after the conclusion of the program in the afternoon. Dinner is included on check-in day (Sunday), and breakfast and lunch are included on the last day (Friday).

Dr. Sutters was a K-12 art educator in an urban school district for seven years and also taught for two years in São Paulo, Brazil. He completed his Undergraduate and Masters degree from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania and attained his Doctorate degree from Ohio State University where he received national recognition for his dissertation. He has been an assistant professor and currently serves as the Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program in Art Education at George Mason University.  Dr. Sutters has presented his research at the state, national and international level and has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. He has served on the Professional Learning through Research (PLR) working group of the National Art Education Association’s Research Commission the past two years and also has been a contributing member of the Data Visualization Working Group. His research focuses on pre-service practices pertaining to licensure and is especially interested in diverse teaching contexts. His studio practice and background is primarily in the 2-D realm including printmaking, drawing and watercolor.
