Shine on Stage at Summer Theater Showcases

Students rehearsing at musical theater summer camp

Posted on May 12, 2017 by Matt Geske

Think you can rehearse and perform a full-length play in one week? We do! Our very unique and highly intensive Summer Theater Showcases, presented by Acting For Young People, give young actors the experience of performing a full-length production while receiving top-level training.

Acting For Young People (AFYP) presents many types of performance projects, and some of our most exciting projects are our Summer Musical Showcase (ages 7-18) and Advanced Actors Showcase (ages 11-18). These intensive programs could also be called “a play in a week”. Participants audition on Monday morning and are in dress rehearsals by Friday, with public performances throughout the following weekend. These projects are also unique in that they feature world premiere productions!

2017 Musical Showcase:
Broadway Review: From Stage to Screen and Back Again!
June 26-30, 2017
(plus weekend performances)

Each year, the Musical production weaves together an original story line with famous musical numbers, ranging from classic Broadway fare to more “jukebox” favorites from shows such as Mama Mia and Jersey Boys. This summer, we’re excited to explore old Hollywood with timeless characters, stories, and show-stopping song and dance numbers, where young performers will spend the week working with teaching artists from AFYP and Potomac Arts Academy, nurturing their acting, dance and vocal techniques.

2017 Advanced Actors Showcase:
Fierce Creatures
August 7-11, 2017
(plus weekend performances)

The Advanced piece is usually based in history, giving young actors the chance to research the life and times of the characters they’re bringing to life. Two of the past world premiere plays, written by Lisa Nanni-Messegee and Todd Messegee, have gone on to be published (Just So, Mr. Kipling and An American House). This summer, we will be exploring the life of the famous deaf and blind girl Helen Keller. Students will have the opportunity to develop complex and exciting characters in this original play!

Space is limited for both of these programs. Don’t delay – sign up today!
