Oboe Lessons and Classes

Whether you’re a beginner or advanced, a young child or seasoned adult, you are welcome to join us to learn how to play the oboe, improve technique and repertoire, enjoy music making, perform and more! Mason Community Arts Academy in Fairfax, Virginia offers the perfect blend of university-quality oboe teachers and a supportive environment with other community members.

Want to give us try? We suggest starting by scheduling a paid (non-refundable) trial lesson with an instructor to ensure a good fit. After the trial lesson, students can then schedule a consistent day & time for the remainder of the current semester (Fall, Spring and Summer).

Our instructors are university trained musicians, and many are professional Teaching Artists. All of our teachers undergo a rigorous background check through George Mason University. Lessons take place at the Academy building at 4260 Chain Bridge Road in Fairfax, VA near the Mason campus.

Along with lessons, students can perform in recitals, take studio classes, and join chamber (small group) ensembles. In the summer, students are encouraged to join our Band Camp.

Fun facts about the oboe:

  • The oboe is part of the “Woodwind Family” in the orchestra.
  • A musician who plays the oboe is called an oboist or an oboe player.
  • The regular oboe first appeared in the mid-17th century, when it was called a hautbois.
  • Music for the standard oboe is written in concert pitch, and the instrument has a soprano range.
