MASON SUMMER TRUMPET ACADEMY
Part of Summer Music Intensive Week

Join fellow trumpeters in a unique and engaging educational experience at Mason’s Trumpet Academy. Led by Mason School of Music professor Dr. Kevin Gebo, participants will learn different trumpet fundamentals and playing styles through daily master classes, group lessons, chamber ensembles, solo performances, and world class guest artists. Students will strengthen their musicianship and trumpet skills as they prepare for an exciting musical future. Family and friends will enjoy a final student performance on the last day.

Students have the option to stay in on-campus housing and experience a week of campus life, with special evening activities included, while gaining new friendships with other like-minded artistic students. Added cost = $640

Whether you live near or far, here’s your chance to experience university life at Mason! Students ages 13-18 can enjoy on-campus housing accommodations and meals, along with special evening activities. Students are fully supervised all week, with both male and female RA’s in housing. Rooms are double occupancy (linens and wi-fi included), and 3 meals a day are provided. Check in is Sunday, July 30th between 3:00 – 5:00 pm, and students will check out Friday morning and be ready to depart immediately after the conclusion of the program in the afternoon. Dinner is included on check-in day (Sunday), and breakfast and lunch are included on the last day (Friday).

Kevin Gebo is an internationally performing trumpeter as well as a freelance musician and soloist in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Kevin frequently travels as a guest performer and clinician to universities and festivals and has been on faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University and West Chester University as Adjunct Professor of Trumpet.

He has performed with musicians and ensembles such as Andrea Bocelli, Idina Menzel and the Brass Band of Battle Creek, and can be seen frequently performing with the Washington Symphonic Brass, Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. His performances have taken him all across the country as well as performances in Canada, Austria, Australia and Germany. He was the principal trumpet on the Naxos recording of William Bolcom’s “Songs of Innocence and Experience” which won four Grammy awards including “Best Classical Album”.

Some of Kevin’s most memorable experiences have been performing in the Inaugural Parade for President Barack Obama and for Pope Francis’ Papal Mass during his visit to the United States. Kevin was invited by Julia Fordham and Paul Reiser to perform as a featured guest on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on their hit single “UnSung Hero”.

Kevin received a Bachelor’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Michigan, Master’s Degree from the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Doctorate degree from The Catholic University of America. Kevin is currently a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He plays Pickett mouthpieces exclusively and is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

Since taking up the trumpet at age twelve in his hometown of Lafayette, LA Graham Breedlove has performed on four continents in more than twenty countries, with headliners representing more than one hundred Grammy nominations. Among these are: The Saturday Night Live Band, Ray Charles, Wynton Marsalis, Ramsey Lewis, Mariah Carey, and Doc Severinsen. As a leader, Breedlove is a Summit Records recording artist. When reviewing his debut CD “Coming Home”, released in 2001, Amazon.com states, “This CD is like a bottomless glass of good wine”. The Graham Breedlove Quintet appears regularly at the Kennedy Center, and was recently invited by the Obama administration to perform at the White House. Graham is listed in the book Trumpet Greats, which is “a biographical dictionary of famous trumpeters since the Baroque Era” by noted educator/author/trumpeter David Hickman. As a sideman, Breedlove has appeared on more than 200 recordings, including back-to-back Grammy winners in 2004 and 2005.

Currently, Mr. Breedlove is a trumpet soloist with the Army Blues jazz ensemble, part of The United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own” in Washington, DC and he has appeared as a soloist, composer/arranger or lead player on seven CDs with the Army Blues. Graham also appears as musical director, soloist, and composer/arranger on “Voodoo Boogaloo” and “Back to the Bayou”, critically acclaimed recordings by Swamp Romp, a Louisiana-music group comprised of members of the Army Blues. In an effort to promote jazz, Breedlove has presented clinics, masterclasses, and appeared as a guest soloist at colleges and universities across the country, and he has served on the faculties of Towson University, Catholic University of America and the National Jazz Workshop. Graham also appears on the Hal Leonard Jazz Play Along Series, an educational book/CD series with over 150 volumes currently available in music stores around the world. During the 2008 holiday season, Breedlove volunteered to participate in a USO concert tour of Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan, performing for thousands of military men and women with country singers Mark Wills and Craig Morgan, comedian Louis CK, and model/TV personality Leann Tweeden. In 2011 he was honored by his undergraduate alma mater when he was inducted into the LSU Alumni Association Hall of Distinction as the 2011 Young Alumnus of the Year.

Mr. Breedlove holds the Bachelor of Music degree from Louisiana State University, the Master of Music degree and Performer’s Certificate from Indiana University, and has studied with world famous masters David Baker, Alvin Batiste, Byron Stripling, and Stephen Burns.
