Musical Ambassadors

Music outreach program in the community

Musical Ambassadors Program

The Musical Ambassadors program was introduced in Fall 2010 in partnership with Mason’s School of Music. Select Mason music students, who participated in small ensembles, were chosen as “Musical Ambassadors.” These Ambassadors acted as representatives of Mason’s School of Music to the community at large.

The Ambassadors went to area organizations/schools to present special performances. These performances were followed by an interactive musical experience, such as a jam session, group lesson or drum circle. Audience members were encouraged to play, sing and clap along using instruments from our Instruments in the Attic program.

The intent of this program was threefold: to provide community outreach performance opportunities for Mason students, to reach out to selected community organizations/ groups who may face barriers to arts access and who could benefit from an interactive musical experience, and to utilize donated musical instruments for meaningful community building.

The Mason Community Arts Academy has presented Musical Ambassadors programs in the following local organizations:

  • Wounded Warriors/ Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC
  • Green Acres Elementary School in Fairfax
  • Guitars Not Guns in Northern Virginia
  • Heatherwood Retirement Community in Burke
