Biography:

Jennifer Decker, Lyric Soprano, is both a 2015 GMU Graduate with a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and a 2000 GMU graduate with a BM in Vocal Performance, studying under Professor Patricia Miller. Singing at church since age three, she has had a passion for music all her life. Her experience includes numerous stage credits –solo, choral, operatic, and musical theater. Upcoming engagements include a collaborative recital with Pianist Martin Gallegos in August 2016 and Soprano Soloist for the PWC Combined High school Choir/Orchestra Messiah concert Dec 2016 – Hylton Performing Arts Center. Recent engagements include singing the role of Elsie in the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop production of Yeomen of the Guard July 2015, waitlisted for the Washington National Opera Chorus, singing for GMU RHT Graduation May 15 – Hylton Performing Arts Center; and singing for the GMU Commencement ceremonies on May 16th in the Patriot Center, Graduate Vocal recital, May 10 in Merchant Hall – Hylton Performing Arts Center; Messiah Soloist – Hylton Performing Arts Center (Dec 2013, 2014, 2015) the Amalfi Coast Music Festival (Maiori, Italy) with scenes from Pagliacci, Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni, and Faust – July 2014; singing on the GMU Honors Recital – May 2014; and singing the role of Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro – Mason Opera April 2014. Other credits include singing Handel’s ”Rejoice, Greatly” with OPHS Choir/Orchestra in Dec 2014 & Dec 2013, the Mother in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors – Hylton Performing Arts Center & Mason Opera, Dec 2013 & Dec 2012; Marcellina in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Nedda (scenes) in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Mimi (scenes) in Puccini’s La Bohème – Amalfi Coast Music Festival July 2013; First Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute – Mason Opera April 2013; and winner of her Graduate category at the state level of NATS, March 2013. Jennifer is a frequent soloist with the GMU School of Music working with conductor Dr. Dennis Layendecker as a winner in the Concerto Competition singing “Cäcelie” by Strauss (May 2013), as a soloist for the GMU Messiah Concert singing “Rejoice, Greatly” by Handel (Dec 2012), and in many community musical outreach programs.

Ms. Decker enjoys her day job of Office Manager/Executive Assistant/Executive Board Liaison at the Hylton Performing Arts Center and being a Vocal Teaching Artist for the Potomac Arts Academy. . She also plays piano, has accompanied/led church worship bands and has taught private and group voice/piano lessons over the last 15 years. Jennifer teaches students of all ages, believing that solid, correct vocal breathing/singing technique is the foundation for limitless possibilities in creating music.
