CFA Announces Family Series for 2019-20 Season

George Mason University’s Center for the Arts announces its 2019-20 Family Series performances. The new series features four delightful performances presented by leading national touring companies and talented artists.

Designed for young audiences, the Family Series introduces children to the arts through engaging live performances in music, dance, and storytelling. “Peter Rabbit Tales” kicks off the series on Sunday, October 6, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Produced by Enchantment Theatre Company, the production brings the classic story “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” written by Beatrix Potter, alive on stage, telling a set of adventures of a mischievous little rabbit in Mr. McGregor’s garden through captivating storylines, playful characters, and enchanting music.

Three equally exciting family production will take place this winter and next year:

  • “The Very Hungry Caterpillar Christmas”—Sunday, December 1, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
  • “Hot Peas ‘n Butter”—Sunday, March 1, 2020, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
  • “The Magic of Bill Blagg Live!”—Sunday, May 3, 2020, at 2 p.m.

The cost for each show is $15 for general admission or $10 for children in grades 12 and under, accompanied by an adult. A series package is also available for purchase at the rate of $48 for general admission and $32 for children. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Female Quartet

Learn music while having fun with your children through movement and sound! Join Mason Academy Parents (MAP), our parent/family group, to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a special interactive workshop exclusively open to Academy families and their friends, Thursday, October 3, 7 p.m. at George Mason University Center for the Arts. The event is free. Families who are interested in attending the workshop should sign up HERE.

 

The all-female quartet LADAMA will kick off the workshop with one traditional song performance and dive into their educational programming. Participants will learn lyrics, rhythm, and movement to a set of songs by singing, dancing, and playing together. Each song will include one of four things for the audience to do while performing along including dance movement; lyrics in Spanish, English or Portuguese; rhythm games; and body percussion. Performance will feature one song from each band member’s home country including United States, Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela.

 

LADAMA Family Workshop George Mason University Center for the Arts Concert Hall October 3, Thursday 7 pm

 

LADAMA is a Latin Alternative quartet that is made up of four musicians with different backgrounds. The four women uniquely blend their music with seamlessly shifting instrumentation among bandola llanera (a mandolin relative), guitar, voice, and various percussion instruments. Their music includes genres from electric to acoustic in Spanish, English, and Portuguese and blends South American and Caribbean styles such as cumbia, coco, maracatu, onda nueva and joropo with soul, R&B, and pop.

The LADAMA concert will be held on Friday, October 4, 8 p.m. at Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The admission is $25 per person. Arts Alive! Festival Invites Area Families

The 8th annual Arts Alive! festival, presented by the Prince William County Arts Council and the Hylton Performing Arts Center, returns to the Hylton Center with a dazzling line up of local arts the entire family will enjoy. Festival will feature multiple indoor and outdoor stage performances, hands-on activities and demonstrations, food and craft vendors, and more! The event is free and open to the public.

MAP Invites Families for a Fun Concert June 15

Mason Academy Parents is kicking off the summer with the U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters concert, Saturday, June 15, from 7-8 p.m. at the Workhouse Arts Center, located at 9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton, Virginia. The concert is free and open to the public.

Jen Gibson, one of the leaders of  MAP, coordinates this fun outing for all families interested in meeting one another outside of the Academy.

“I’m excited to create opportunities for families at the Academy to connect and build community,” said Gibson. “Concert outings are a great way to get to know each other in a casual setting. They have been a real hit so far.”

Gibson will arrive at 6:15 p.m. to reserve a spot for families to sit together. Please look for a big yellow and green umbrella.

The official U.S. Navy’s chorus, the Sea Chanters will perform a variety of music ranging from classic to opera. This event is a part of the Mount Vernon Nights concert series. For more details click HERE or contact masonacademyparents@gmail.com.
