PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Ovations Chamber Strings Academy at Mason offers an exciting Orchestra Summer Camp opportunity for our regions string students (rising 7th graders through 12th grade). Program directors Glenn Dewey and Erin Eberly invite you to take part in this challenging and enriching summer music experience. Participants will work closely with GMU String faculty, award winning NoVa String educators and professional musicians on challenging string literature in small chamber ensembles. Participants will also perform in one of two string orchestras under the baton of Dr. Dennis Layendecker or Dr. Peter Wilson with exciting performances by all of the ensembles at the end of the week. Placement seating auditions will take place on Sunday, June 24th to determine orchestra and chamber group assignment.

2012 Program Highlights:

"Gold" Orchestra:
Dr. Peter Wilson, Guest Conductor
Music Director of the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra and the United Youth Symphony Orchestra (The Youth Orchestras of Fairfax)

Students participating in this group perform grade 3-4 level music in both the large string orchestra and chamber music groups. Students will get regular coaching from Ovations faculty. All members of Division 1 will perform in the final concert, both in their chamber ensemble and string orchestra. The primary goal of Division 1 is to provide participants some of their first serious chamber music opportunities, as well as prepare them for more advanced literature in the future. Tone production, intonation, and ensemble and chamber music skills will all be explored.
Sunday Placement Auditions: "Gold Level" Excerpts

"Green" Orchestra:
Dr. Dennis Layendecker, Conductor
Conductor of University Orchestras, Heritage Chair, and Director of the Mason School of Music

Students participating in this group will perform grade 5-6 level music in both their large string orchestra and chamber music groups. Students will receive regular coaching from Ovations Faculty. All members of Division 2 will perform in the final concert, both in their chamber ensemble and string orchestra. The primary goal of Division 2 is to provide more advanced players opportunities to work together with faculty coaches to delve more deeply into advanced concepts of performance and to expand their musical experiences and horizons.
Sunday Placement Auditions: "Gold Level" AND "Green Level" Excerpts
