Summer Music Composition Workshop at Mason
For Composers, Songwriters, and Musicians
Work with outstanding GMU School of Music faculty, including nationally recognized composer Mark Camphouse, to explore your full composing potential! Composition techniques are not learned from a textbook, but are skills we learn through the compositional process. Express your own musical ideas and explore new composing possibilities! Sign up for 1, 2 or all 3 weeks!
What you need to know to take this workshop: basic understanding of treble and bass clef, experience playing an instrument, basic understanding of music theory (scales, key signatures, time signatures) - participants are encouraged to bring in pieces they are currently working on, although it is not required.
Fundamentals of Music Composition (July 7-11)
Join nationally-recognized and award-winning composer (and GMU Music Professor) Mark Camphouse as he presents his unique insights in to the composer's mindset, using structured in-class listening and discussion, along with introductions to basic elements of the creative process, including melodic construction, harmony and counterpoint. This is a must-have foundation for any aspiring composer!
21st Century Composition (July 14-18)
Dr. Michael Nickens and Dr. Jesse Guessford from the GMU School of Music will explore the music of the 21st century through the intersection of improvisation, notation, and electronics. The focus of the week will be to bring these elements together in improvisations and compositional exercises throughout the week.
NEW! Art of Songwriting (July 21-25)
New for 2014! Learn creative songwriting techniques and skills from David Chávez to add to your songwriting toolkit. Begin writing your own songs with confidence or get help with editing/ re-arranging songs you have already written.
2014 Program Highlights:
- Discussion and application of classical composition styles
- Exploration of modern music styles and advances in music technology
- Experimentation with improvisation analysis and techniques
- Exposure to traditional methods and modern tools for composers
- New songwriting week
- Expert Composition faculty from GMU's School of Music

REGISTER - Summer Music Composition Workshop
BASIC TUITION COST: $198 per week
- Sign up for one week, two weeks, or all three weeks
- $20 supply fee (per week)
- A $3 processing fee is added to all registration transactions
- Choose Split Payment during registration to pay part now, and part on June 1st
Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop, but it is NOT required. Free wireless access will be available.
Although there will not be a "lunch break", if you would like food options before and/or after the workshop, we recommend Bernie's Deli, which is located 2 blocks away from the Potomac building.

If a registrant has to cancel participation in this program, a tuition refund (minus a $50 cancellation fee) will be given provided that notice is received by the Potomac Arts Academy no later than 2 weeks before the program start date. No refunds will be granted after this date without valid medical documentation.
