Saturday School for the Arts - Outreach

Saturday School for the Arts @ Hunters Woods

In 2009, the Potomac Arts Academy, the community outreach organization for George Mason University's College of Visual and Performing Arts, entered into a collaboration initiative with Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences in Reston, VA and Southgate Community Center in Reston, VA to launch a pilot Arts Education program - "Hunters Woods Saturday School for the Arts". The purpose of the program is to target selected students in the Hunters Woods community that are traditionally under served in the arts, and to provide them with supplemental arts education and enrichment.

The talents and expertise of George Mason University faculty and students are utilized in building the curriculum and teaching the classes. Mentor Professors from each of the four disciplines of the College of Visual and Performing Arts help design a curriculum with the overall purpose of encouraging and strengthening a lifelong love and understanding of the arts.Select Mason students from each discipline act as instructors/assistants for the program, often fulfilling part of their Education Methods cirriculum requirements through their participation.

Now in 2012 with the 4th year of our program well underway, we have gone from serving about 28 students to over 50! These children are given opportunities to explore Music, Theater, Dance and Visual Art in extraordinary ways. Through continued evaluation and assessment, we look forward to improving and expanding this successful outreach program in the future!
