Music Composition, Theory & Songwriting Classes


Music Composition Classes for Kids, Teens & Adults

Looking for a fun way to learn how to compose music, write songs and/or understand music theory? The Potomac Arts Academy in Fairfax, VA offers the perfect blend of university-quality music composition teachers and a friendly environment with other community members.

Semester: SPRING 2015 (January/February thru May/June)
Group Class Schedule At-A-Glance

Composition ClassComposition: SONGWRITING CLASS
Ages: 13 to 18 yrs
Try your hand at songwriting! Participants will be challenged to create while learning the various elements that go into the craft of songwriting. Not only will students be composing, but they will also be studying popular songs in an attempt to further understand the importance of innovation while balancing tradition. From melody and harmony to form and lyric writing, the instructor will equip participants with the tools needed to create their own songs. (Participants are expected to have varying levels of musical experience - don't be intimidated!)

Music FundamentalsMUSIC FUNDAMENTALS FOR KIDS Ages: 9 to 12 yrs
Music Fundamentals is designed as an introductory course in sight-singing and music theory. The course will guide the students on the concepts of sol-fege and movable "do" as applied to music sight-reading. Students will engage in ear-training exercises to develop their interval recognition and assist in the sight-reading process. Additionally, the course will discuss music theory and analysis, in terms of roman numeral analysis and functional harmony.

Music TheoryMUSIC THEORY FOR TEENS Ages: 13 to 18 yrs
Music Theory is designed to give the more advanced student an opportunity to understand how music functions and build efficient learning practices. Students of any instrumental/ vocal background are welcome, but all students are required to have the ability to read music at at least an intermediate level prior to enrolling.
