Music Composition Classes for Kids and Adults

Looking for a fun way to learn how to compose music? The Potomac Arts Academy in Fairfax, VA offers the perfect blend of university-quality music composition teachers and a friendly environment with other community members.

FOR KIDS:

FOR TEENS:

  • Composition 1/Age 13-Adult: Wednesdays, 7:15PM-8:15PM, Feb 15
    CLOSED 02/14/12
    This course will be an introduction into the vast and exciting world of music composition. Basic composition skills such as counterpoint, harmonic and melodic construction, as well as music theory and computer notation will be utilized to give the student a good understanding of how to get their ideas from their head to the page. This course will give the student a great understanding of music theory and how it applies to music composition, and conversely, how music composition applies to music theory. Students will also gain a basic understanding of computer notation software to give them more tools to create a professional looking piece of music.

RECITALS:
(optional)
Potomac students of all ages are encouraged to perform in the Fall and/or Spring recital on the GMU campus. The recital is held in the wonderful deLaski Performing Arts space (equipped with a Steinway concert grand piano). Friends and family are welcome to attend the recital, which is free and open to the public- followed by light refreshments. After all of your hard work during the semester, come and show your talents! There is NO recital fee for participation.

Hello, I teach Composition for Teens and Adults. Click here to read more about me!
Stefan Schuck is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Music Composition at George Mason University. He graduated from Syracuse University in 2010 with a B.M. in Music Composition. While at Syracuse, he received the Irene L. Crooker Award for excellence in music. He has written works ranging from middle school band to professional string quartet. Stefan is also a successful trumpet player and enjoys conducting as well.
