Art Classes & Lessons for Kids, Teens, & Adults

Looking for a fun way to learn how to paint or draw? The Potomac Arts Academy in Fairfax, VA offers the perfect blend of university-quality art teachers and a friendly environment with other community members.

Semester: FALL 2014 (September thru December)
Group Class Schedule At-A-Glance

Art ClassART ADVENTURES CLASS Ages: 4 to 7yrs
Submerge your child into an imaginative art class where creative thinking comes to life! Each week your child will experience the excitement of using multiple art methods including drawing, painting, collage, and printing making to transform their original ideas into works of art! Students will use these methods to create original compositions inspired by art masters, story telling, and the elements and principles of art. At the end of the semester, students have the opportunity to participate in the Potomac Art Showcase at the GMU campus. After that, you can take your art creations home with you! Different themes and concepts are explored each semester, allowing for students to participate multiple times. (All art supplies will be provided during class.)

Art ClassART FOUNDATIONS CLASS Ages: 8 to 11yrs
Introduce your children to the principles of art through art history! Using different mediums, students will explore the basics of color, line, form, and composition. With instruction in technical skills, each student will have the opportunity to explore their individual artistic expression. At the end of the semester, students have the opportunity to participate in the Potomac Art Showcase at the GMU campus. Different themes and concepts are explored each semester, allowing for students to participate multiple times. (All art supplies will be provided during class.)

Art ClassART EXPLORATIONS CLASS Ages: 12 to 18yrs
Teenagers will have a fun but challenging opportunity to explore the history of art, develop technical ability through various exercises, and explore what art has to offer them. At the end of the semester, students have the opportunity to participate in the Potomac Art Showcase at the GMU campus. After that, you can take your art creations home with you! Different themes and concepts are explored each semester, allowing for students to participate multiple times. (All art supplies will be provided during class.)
Fall 2014: This semester explores the fundamentals of art including line, value, and color through various classical masterpieces. Here, students will apply their interpretations of these classics while still developing their own personal artistic voice. Fall semester will focus on drawing, painting, and charcoal projects.
Spring 2015: This semester explores postwar, modern, and contemporary artworks. In the spring we will learn more experimental art forms such as printmaking, collage, and mixed media methods. Students will learn the importance of risk taking in art while still applying the foundations of the elements and principals of art. Personal voice and artistic style will be highly explored and developed and will be parallel to influential artistic movements.


SATURDAYS, 1:00PM-2:15PM, Sept 27 - Dec 6 (10 classes)

Art ClassOIL PAINTING FOR ADULTS Ages: 18+ yrs
This course is an introduction to the materials, tools, and techniques used in oil painting and students are instructed in the skills and methods through lectures, demonstrations, and one on one instruction. Students will work from observation to progress and become skilled and confident with controlling the medium and understanding the process of creating a work of art with oil paint. No prior painting experience is necessary. At the end of the semester, artists have the opportunity to display their work in the Potomac Art Showcase at the GMU campus.
