History of Potomac Arts Academy
Potomac Arts Academy began its journey as the Potomac Music Academy at GMU in 2003 with a generous donation from the Don and Nancy de Laski family. Summer music programs were offered to the community through the Department of Music under the dedicated direction of JoLynne Bailey-Page and other fine faculty members. Primary programs included String Connections - a chamber string program, Jazz Connections, Woodwind Camp and the long standing Orff Schulwerk Teacher Training Program.
Through the next several years other programs were interchanged and added including Brass Camp, Honor Band and Tuba/Euphonium Competition. As things continued to expand and new opportunities arose, it soon became clear that a new infrastructure was needed to support this growth. Libby Curtis was hired in January of 2008 to begin the process of building that structure and lead Potomac as it added year-round classes, masterclasses, children's concerts, and new summer programs in all of the arts disciplines. Along with these additions came the need for a name change and very clear mission as to the direction of the Potomac Arts Academy.
During the summer of 2008 approximately 350 students were participating in Potomac programs. In 2009, the Academy provided top quality arts classes and programs to almost 1100 students. At the end of summer 2010, approximately 1500 community members participated in one or more of our programs, and we offered classes at the new Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas/Prince William for the first time. We also added an exciting Computer Game Design component to our roster.
Our goal is, and will continue to be, bringing the highest caliber arts instruction to the surrounding community as George Mason University leads the way to ensure a vibrant future for our region and beyond.
